Over the years I have found that breaking in a new driver for use in a new designs requires at least 150 hour break in. To that end I mount the pair in a 60 cm (2 ft) square open back baffel and run it through the receiver in my wood shop. Some times the driver is a keeper with great mid range and a nice smooth roll off on the top end. Over the week it slowly sounds better until one day I am struck by the clean, natural response of these loudspeaker drivers.

Now I kept thinking how does one get this sound in a multi driver boxed system ? Well I went to explore the web and found a lot of ideas but I believed they were mostly flawed , one if you tried a full range driver you always ended up with poor response above a given frequency . The sound was harsh or had that “paper shout ” which some people would say sounds nasal . But what does one do if you can’t live with the disjointed sound of multi drivers and their crossovers.

First I designed a crossover which blends the drivers signal to give a seamless transition from a woofer to the tweeter. The early designs had a smooth balanced response, but after living with them for a few weeks I could sense the phase alignment was off. Tried offsetting the tweeter but still didn’t give the single driver focus.
